Hacktober
Hey there, fellow cybersecurity enthusiasts! Ever heard of Hacktober? It's not your typical October story – no pumpkin spice lattes here (though there might be mate, energy drinks and beer). But wait, what's Hacktober all about, and how did it come to be? Let's dive into the origin story and the bits and bytes of Hacktober.
The Origins: A CTF Story
Hacktober didn't just drop out of the digital sky. It all began within the walls of Swisscom. Picture this: a bunch of cyber enthusiasts from Group Security gathering to flex their hacking muscles in 2021 at their own Capture The Flag (CTF) event. They had loads of fun and exchanged some knowledge among each other.
But life goes on and some Swisscom employees had spread their wings on to SBB, Swiss Post, Postfinance and cyllective, still, the passion for the CTF burned on and they wanted to host the CTF again. Early 2022 they got together and had a lightbulb moment. They thought, "Hey, why not turn this CTF into something bigger? Something that brings all our companies and people together?"
The CTF event was about to #LevelUp.
And just like that, Hacktober was born. Swisscom, SBB, Swiss Post, Postfinance and cyllective - they all joined forces, throwing their hacker hats into the Hacktober ring. It wasn't just about CTF challenges anymore; it was about uniting people from different companies for a common cause: #PerformingTogether.
Why October, you ask? It's Cybersecurity Awareness Month and there's the infamous Bavarian Oktoberfest – the perfect fit, right?
The Heart of Hacktober
Hacktober isn't just about Cyber Security; it's about community and celebration. Imagine a crowd of passionate cybersecurity enthusiasts – that's Hacktober. They gather to learn, share their stories (cyber battles, that is), and have a blast together. It's an event for everyone - probably with dark hoodies, laptops plastered with stickers and terminals on screens that look like straight out of the matrix. This year we have teamed up with even more partner companies to bring more people together!
So, what exactly happens throughout October?
It's a whole month packed with security talks, virtual and on-site workshops and Cyber Escape Rooms that make your brain cells do a happy dance, and, of course, the cherry on top – the CTF showdown that takes place on the last Friday of October. But the party doesn't stop there. The week after the CTF event Hacktober concludes with the Hacktoberfest – a final "Prost" to wrap up this epic month.
Also there's a media team, capturing all the highlights. It's like your own cyber red carpet event – minus the paparazzi.
Are you #Ready?
As we wrap up, remember: Hacktober isn't just an event; it's a celebration of all things in cyber security. It's a chance to learn, share, and connect. So whether you're a senior hacking ninja or just a curious cat about the cyber world, Hacktober welcomes you. It's not just about hacking; it's about joining the cyber community and having a blast.
